Mendham Primary School

Maths

Our school uses the Mastery approach to teaching mathematics from EYFS through to year 6.

Teaching maths for mastery involves employing approaches that help pupils to develop a deep and secure knowledge and understanding of mathematics at each stage of their learning, so that by the end of every school year or Key Stage, pupils will have acquired mastery of the mathematical facts and concepts they’ve been exposed to, equipping them to move on confidently and securely to more advanced material.

Pupils will use the White Rose mastery approach in maths, allowing pupils to learn concepts in small steps. These small steps will be progressive and allow a greater understanding of underlying concepts- knowing the ‘why’ as well as the ‘how’. The ideology uses the key principles of using the concrete, pictorial and abstract approach to support this learning.
